Don't insult my assemblypersons, Azmin says of defection talks

Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali said it was insulting to the state assemblypersons in Selangor for suggesting that they may defect to BN.

"There is no defection. Do not offend or insult my assemblypersons and I want to tell this to the prime minister, Umno and BN.

"All of my 43 assemblypersons are highly principled and they are very committed to the cause," he was quoted as saying by New Straits Times.

There had been speculation of possible defections after Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, on Sunday, announced that former Selangor menteri besar Muhammad Muhammad Taib was rejoining Umno.

However, Azmin dismissed it as mere rumours aimed at destabilising the Selangor government.

"Don't try to undermine or sabotage the stability of the state government.

"Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Umno must stop this. They must respect the spirit of democracy in this country.

"That (the current Selangor government) was the wishes made by the rakyat and they must accept that. Do not buy (assemblypersons). Do not use inappropriate ways," he was quoted as saying.

Azmin said the coup rumours were fanned to cover up Najib's "embarrassing" press conference last Sunday.

Najib's announcement of the return of a retired menteri besar was ridiculed due to the prime minister summoning top Umno leaders from across the country back to Kuala Lumpur, giving rise to the expectation of a more significant announcement.

"Senior cabinet members were told to rush back and I think the prime minister was so embarrassed. So they had to create this coup rumours to counter the embarrassment," he was quoted as saying.

Azmin also expressed confidence in his assemblypersons.

"They are here to stay with the cause, with a clear idealism to fight corruption and kleptocrats.

"They are very committed and I am so proud to have all these assemblypersons in Selangor because they work hard," he was quoted as saying.
