Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali was unimpressed at BN's game plan to bring together three former state menteri besars in a bid to recapture Selangor.

“We know who these three are and we know why they are former menteri besars.

“If that’s the type of quality that they have, I wish them all the best,” Azmin told reporters after launching Selangor Bio Bay in Pulau Indah today.

Azmin was referring to Selangor Umno liaison chairperson Noh Omar's announcement that three former Selangor menteri besars, namely Muhammad Muhammad Taib, Abu Hassan Omar and Mohamad Khir Toyo, will join forces to aid BN in Selangor.

Claiming that his three predecessors had a "bad record", Azmin was confident that they will not be able to impact the federal opposition's hold on Selangor.

He added that Selangor Umno had to resort to old-timers as it was unable to regain the people's support on its own.

“They won’t succeed as Noh himself failed in gaining the support of young voters,” he said.

Muhammad had served as Selangor menteri besar from 1986 to 1997 and was succeeded by Abu Hassan between 1997 to 2000. Khir was menteri besar for the subsequent eight years.

The former Selangor menteri besars came into focus following Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's announcement in a special press conference last week that Muhammad was rejoining Umno.

Muhammad had joined PAS in 2013 and later PKR in 2015.

Prior to the announcement, there were speculations that Najib was about to announce a coup in Selangor but this did not materialise.

Azmin later asked Najib to respect the democratic principles following the speculations.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan later said there was no reason for a coup in Selangor with less than a year left to the general election.

However, he also criticised Azmin, stating that the Selangor menteri besar was in no position to complain about possible coups in the state due to his role in trying to bring down the BN federal government on Sept 16, 2008.

Azmin today denied that the move in 2008, spearheaded by PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, was a coup.

Instead, the PKR deputy president explained that what had occurred at the time was a result of BN lawmakers’ loss of confidence in the party leadership.

“They were unhappy with BN’s policies, including in Sabah and Sarawak.

“Pakatan Rakyat (at the time) did not buy their support,” Azmin said.
