Student activist Khairul Anuar Ahmad Zainuddin who was arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA) early this month was expelled from the Institut Kemahiran Mara (IKM) with immediate effect.

The dismissal was relayed to Khairul's family through a letter dated July 9 by IKM Petaling Jaya. Khairul, 24, was a second-year electrical engineering student.

The letter gave two reasons for Khairul's dismissal: first, for tarnishing the image of the institute and second, for failing to reply to a show-cause letter given to Khairul earlier.

On June 25, the institute had issued a show-cause letter to Khairul regarding his involvement in the reformasi movement and for influencing other students to join in.

The show-cause letter also accused him of "being involved in a reformasi motivational workshop intended to spur reformists to carry out plans to overthrow the government via street demonstrations".

"You were also present at a secret meeting with the reformasi group and Keadilan president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to discuss street demonstrations to corrode the people's faith in the government," it further stated.

The letter also stated that the charges were based on information provided by the police Special Branch.

Sources close to the family informed malaysiakini that Khairul was about to reply to the show-cause letter but was arrested before he could do so.

On July 5, Khairul was detained at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur while accompanying six student activists who were told to present themselves there in connection with an anti-ISA demonstration in front of the National Mosque on June 8.

His family is still waiting for police approval to visit him for the second time.
