Video linking cop with gambling den to be investigated

The police are in the midst of investigating the footage of a video which allegedly links a Johor police officer with illegal gambling operators.

State police chief Mohd Khalil Khader Mohd (photo) said action would be taken in accordance with the law if the policeman’s alleged underworld links were proven in the four-minute footage.

"I thank the people who produced the video. Our investigations will be detailed and transparent and I stress the force will not compromise on the negligence of its officers and staff in upholding integrity," he told reporters after a meeting with the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) here today.

Present at the meeting were MCPF senior vice-chairman Lee Lam Thye and Johor MCPF chairperson Freddie Long Hoo Hin.

The video, which went viral on the internet, claimed that gambling outlets nationwide were protected by the police, with a police officer in a Johor district said to be involved with gambling operators.

Mohd Khalil said he had met all district police chiefs in the state so that they would focus on gambling activities.

He said operations to curb illegal gambling had been carried out continuously over the past two weeks.

On the outcome of the meeting, Mohd Khalil said the police and MCPF would focus on efforts to tackle street crime in the state and increase the involvement of schools in crime prevention programmes.
