Take responsibility for flood, PKR tells Kedah MB

PKR’s Johari Abdul has hit out Kedah Menteri Besar Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, urging him to take full responsibility for the recent flood in the state.

"When there were certain quarters querying the missing Pakatan Harapan leaders, we want to ask who is now ruling Kedah?

"The MB should be responsible for the welfare of the state.

In fact, all state departments and relevant agencies should be prepared to face the possibility of floods," Johari said in a statement today.

Kedah Umno Youth had questioned the "absence" of opposition leadership when the state faced a massive flood during the heavy downpour on Sept 21.

The flood caused more than 3,000 people in Perlis and Kedah to be evacuated from their homes.

"As Harapan leaders, we know our responsibilities, and we were at the scene of the floods helping the victims.

“But we do not show off like Umno leaders who let the media know about their activities helping people," he said.

"I truly sympathise with those who suffered in the floods as families, babies, children, women and senior citizens were involved,” Johari said.

The Sungai Petani MP said that the flood problem should have been resolved with proper drainage by now, as a similar flood had occurred 10 years ago.

He added that the Kedah government should take preventive measures to address the flood problem in a holistic manner, so there is no repeat of the disaster in the future.

"We hope the state government will be serious about the issue, and find proper ways to address the problem and monitor the situation closely, due to the frequency of floods hitting Kedah nowadays," he said.

A similar accusation had been levelled at Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for the flash floods in Penang earlier in the month.
