Umno minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor has warned that teachers are among the civil servants that would be retrenched if the opposition were to take Putrajaya.

"Please remember, we are in the same boat, you and me," he said when attending a prize-giving ceremony at SK Putrajaya Presint 14(1).

"Certain quarters said they want to get rid of half of the civil servants (after they take power)," he said without naming the opposition.

"So, let us fight to ensure (a better future) for the country, for our children, parents and religion," he said.

The event was attended by students and teachers from the primary schools and secondary schools in the vicinity.

Tengku Adnan, who is known as Ku Nan, also openly invited attractive teachers to join Umno.

"To the comel (cute) teachers, come, come (and join us) to become division chiefs, branch chiefs, secretaries," he said, adding that the party had lifted a ban on recruiting members from the teaching community.

The federal territories minister said the decision was made because Umno felt that it needed to strengthen its bonds with teachers, who used to join the ruling party in the past.

"Previously, our party became powerful because of teachers," he said.
