For the other Wan Azizah, it’s all about chickens

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak when tabling Budget 2018 in the Dewan Rakyat on Friday praised successful entrepreneur Wan Azizah Wan Salleh on her poultry business endeavour.

Najib said Wan Azizah managed to become a millionaire in poultry farming and processing with an initial capital of RM500 from Amanah Iktiar Malaysia (AIM) in 1993.

The 45-year-old businesswoman, who is affectionately known as Kak Zah, said that before getting the loan from AIM, her husband Mat Yazid Jusoh, 49, and she were working as farmers, earning only a meagre income, which was not even enough to support their family.

“We thought of various ways to increase our income before deciding to go into the poultry business, raising chickens at the back of our house. My husband and I would go village to village to sell the chickens.

"Our first sale started with five chickens. But the demand increased from time to time and we faced capital constraints. Thank God, it was then that I was introduced to Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) by a friend,” she said at her business premises in Kampung Banir Belikong, Selising, in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, yesterday.

From there, Wan Azizah said, her husband opened a small stall by the side of the road near their home.

"When the demand for the poultry continued to increase, we started sourcing chicken from farms, taking several loans from AIM until it reached RM50,000, and we expanded our business," she said.

Armed with the capital, Wan Azizah built a larger shop with the name ‘Ziza Ayam Proses’ in the same area and employed three workers to clean and send chicken supplies to customers and restaurants.

"Thank God, with more than 20 years in the business now, I have nine employees with an average sale of 900 chicks a day. I have also built a comfortable home to live with my six children," she said.

"I would like to thank the government, especially the prime minister," said Wan Azizah, who was awarded the ‘Usahawan Berjaya AIM Peringkat Nasional’ in 2007.

She said the AIM loan service provides great benefits to those who want to develop themselves and would be a great loss if this opportunity is not taken advantage of and utilised as best as possible.
