Kedah Umno Youth has supported a proposal for Kedah Menteri Besar Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah to resign as president of the Kedah Football Association (KFA), according to Utusan Malaysia.
The state's Umno Youth chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said this position was based on the fact that Umno had been repeatedly turned into a scapegoat over football issues.
Shaiful said the action of fans booing Bashah during the final match of the Malaysia Cup at Shah Alam stadium was uncalled for.
"His sacrifices and contributions are not appreciated and they even embarrassed him at the stadium the other day.
"Therefore we believe it would be best for all Kedah Umno leaders including its exco who hold positions in KFA... to relinquish their positions," he was quoted as saying.
Kedah fans have been upset after many failed to secure tickets to the showdown between Kedah and Johor Darul Takzim last Saturday.
This was because 22,000 of the 34,000 tickets for Kedah were reserved for bus permit holders and officials, leaving only 12,000 tickets to be sold to fans online and offline.
Shaiful accused "interested parties" of trying to create anger and generate political sympathy by making Umno a scapegoat.
He said Bashah had done much for the state's football including securing RM54 million in funding for the football association for the next two years.
He added that the menteri besar had also helped maintain tickets for matches at Darul Aman Stadium at one of the lowest rates.
