ROS: Bersatu risks deregistration over name of youth wing

Bersatu may be declared illegal by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) over the name of its youth wing.

According to Utusan Online, Bersatu is not allowed to use the name Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (Armada) for its youth wing because it was not part of the party's constitution.

ROS director-general Surayati Ibrahim said using "Armada" was against the party constitution and the Societies Act 1966.

"Such a serious offence can cause an organisation to be deregistered. Investigations are ongoing," she said.

Bersatu was founded last year by former Umno leaders who were in opposition to Umno president Najib Abdul Razak.

It is notable that Bersatu has a sizeable youth membership. An estimated 55 percent of the party's 200,000 members are below 35.

Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has yet to respond to requests for comments.
