PARLIAMENT | Deputy Foreign Minister Reezal Merican Naina Merican brushed off the allegation that Malaysia lost its bid to be re-elected to the UN Security Council (UNSC).

He told the Dewan Rakyat today that Malaysia never lobbied for the seat when its term as one of ten non-permanent members of the council ended in 2016.

"On (the speculation that we) failed to continue our membership at UN Security Council, that is not true.

“We never lobbied for (the seat), our term is only two years, which ended in 2016," he said.

"In the history of the UN Security Council, no country has become a non-permanent member for two consecutive terms," he added.

Reezal was responding to Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad (Amanah-Kuala Terengganu) who questioned if Malaysia had failed its bid for a seat on the UNSC. 

The question was raised following the country's failure in securing its bid in United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) seat. 

Malaysia was elected as a member of the UNHRC for the 2006 - 2009 and 2010 -2013 terms.
