Anwar is currently recovering from shoulder surgery, which he underwent last Sunday.
In a statement later, Anwar's son Muhammad Ihsan thanked Najib and Rosmah for their visit, as well as all the medical staff who had treated him.
"May I take this opportunity to request that our father, Anwar is allowed to recuperate in a medical facility outside of prison and given access to all modalities of physiotherapy until full recovery," Muhammad Ihsan added.
The former deputy prime minister’s shoulder injury was originally due to an accident in 2014 in Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur.
The pain was originally managed through exercise and physiotherapy, but prison conditions had made it difficult for Anwar to keep up with the physical regime.
Anwar’s five-year prison sentence on the charge of sodomy started in February 2015. He has maintained his innocence and claimed that the charge was politically motivated.
The family had said that he began to complain that his condition was worsening in September that year.
Anwar's condition deteriorated following an accident on Sept 22, when an escort vehicle rammed into the rear of the car ferrying him from Kuala Lumpur Hospital back to prison.
