The High Court in Kuala Lumpur will hear former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir's application to cite Deputy Transport Minister Abdul Aziz Kaprawi for contempt on Jan 26.

The case was initially supposed to be heard today but Aziz's legal team had sought a postponement because they needed time to obtain a written judgment by presiding judge Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim.

This is the July decision of Justice Ahmad Zaidi, who had ruled against Mukhriz's application to cite Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for contempt.

Mukhriz's lawyer had retrieved the written judgement last week.

Mukhriz's lawyer, Mohd Haniff Khatri Abdulla, said the matter was decided in chambers and he did not object to Aziz's request.

The contempt proceedings are part of Mukhriz's defamation suit against Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad, an aide to the prime minister.

Mukhriz (photo) had previously attempted to cite Najib for contempt over the contents of the prime minister's press release on July 7.

Following this, Justice Ahmad Zaidi ruled that Najib did not indicate any reference to Mukhriz's suit against Tengku Sariffuddin.

Aziz, who is also an Umno supreme council member and the Sri Gading MP, was on July 15 quoted by Malay daily Sinar Harian as saying that Dr Mahathir Mohamad wanted Mukhriz, his youngest son, to be prime minister.

Mukhriz's application to cite Aziz for contempt had pleaded that Aziz had created a wrong public impression of the ongoing trial and was interfering with its outcome.

The suit against Tengku Sariffuddin was filed on May 3 last year, over four press statements issued that year.

Mukhriz argued that the defamatory statements had suggested that he, together with other Bersatu leaders, had conspired to topple a legitimately elected government.

Tengku Sariffuddin's defence statement argued that he had not defamed Mukhriz but had instead issued statements to counter unjust accusations levelled against the prime minister.
