Police will monitor Pakatan Harapan’s protest against the high fuel prices outside the Parliament, and will stop the protesters if they march, Dang Wangi police chief Shaharudin Abdullah said.

“If they march, we will stop them. If they assemble peacefully, we will monitor them,” Shaharudin (photo) said when contacted today, adding that 10 police officers would be stationed at the protest venue.

The protest, planned to last 42 hours, is scheduled to begin at 1am tomorrow and end at 6pm on Wednesday.

Protesters who disobey police orders would be investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012, he added, but declined to reveal if arrests would be made.

Shaharudin also confirmed that police had not received any notice from protest organisers.

Harapan announced last week that it would proceed with its plan to camp outside Parliament after prices for all fuels - RON95, RON97 and diesel - hit record highs since the government introduced a weekly price float system.

"Harapan Youth, NGOs and youth movements have decided to camp outside Parliament... on Nov 21 (Tuesday).

"We urge the people to join us in this protest to ensure that the prices of fuel go down and remain stable," Amanah Youth deputy chief Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin (photo) had said.

Amanah Youth had also previously organised "flash mobs" and demonstrations to protest against the rising prices of fuel.

The weekly fuel price system was implemented on March 30.

New prices, determined by global oil prices based on the Mean of Platts Singapore (Mops) and the ringgit's strength against the US dollar, are announced every Wednesday and come into effect at midnight.
