History books here do not reflect the whole truth, especially concerning the struggle for independence, claimed DAP International Affairs secretary Ronnie Liu today.

According to him, the information contained in these books are 'doctored' and not exhaustive.

"The books state that only a few political parties fought for independence. In fact, many people were against the colonial government at that time," he said when contacted.

He said the books left out others who struggled for independence such as some ulama (religious leaders), labour movement leaders like V David and Chinese educationists such as Lim Lian Geok.

Liu had recently come under fire from Umno Youth leaders over his article on the party website which stated that Umno and Tunku Abdul Rahman were not the only ones who fought for independence.

'Worthy and important'

Meanwhile, Liu said he would definitely continue to write on this topic as it is 'worthy and important'.

On the suggestion that other DAP leaders are not keen on backing him, he said this was a false perception created by the mainstream media.

He said DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had issued statements on the matter but were not published by the media.

He claimed that Umno Youth was purposely tarnishing DAP's image to gain political mileage.

Liu also dismissed speculations that he has resigned from his post.

He clarified that he had merely suggested to the party's new recruit, academic Prof P Ramasamy, to assume the position due to his experience.

However, the proposal is subject to approval by the central committee, he added.
