Two teenage siblings arrested in connection with the deadly fire at the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah school in Keramat two months ago were sentenced to two months' jail after testing positive for cannabis. 

The two, aged 16 and 17, pleaded guilty before a Juvenile Court in Kuala Lumpur today.

They were charged under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act for allegedly using ganja.

The court also ordered the two to be placed under a bond of RM5,000 each without security by the parents to ensure that they report to the nearest National Anti-Drug Agency twice a month.  

It means if the parents fail to bring them to the agency twice a month for a period of two years, they must pay the RM5,000 bond.

DPP Nordin Ismail and Norakmal Farhan Aziz had earlier asked the court to place the teenagers at the Henry Gurney school.

A report from the Welfare Department on the accused was read to magistrate Zilfinaz Abbas before she passed the sentence.

As the two had been on remand since their arrest last September, they are expected to be released this afternoon. 

Meanwhile, one of the two 16-year-olds charged with the murder of 23 people, including 21 tahfiz students, claimed trial for testing positive for drugs. 

The other 16-year-old was not found positive for drugs but is still on remand following the murder charge.

However, a 12-year-old boy who was arrested along with the seven boys and also not found positive for any drugs was released today.  

It was reported that the two 16-year-olds were charged with 23 counts of murder each. 

The murder case is fixed for mention on Jan 3.
