An 18-year-old boy who was arrested in connection with the deadly fire at the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah school in Keramat has been acquitted by the Magistrate's Court in Kuala Lumpur over two charges of taking drugs.

This after the urine sample on Mohamad Shahrulnizam Ikmal was found to be negative.

Magistrate Umzarul An Nur Umar then discharged and acquitted the 18-year-old boy.

Shahrulnizam was charged under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act with taking cannabis. The drugs were detected at the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters at about 11.35pm on Sept 16.

DPP Noor Jazilah Mohd Yushaa appeared for the prosecution while lawyer Ram Karpal Singh represented Shahrulnizam.

Yesterday, it was reported that two siblings aged 16 and 17 were sentenced to two months' jail for taking cannabis, while a 12-year-old boy who was also arrested in connection with the fire was acquitted after testing negative, 

In September, two teenagers were charged with the murder of 21 tahfiz students and two teachers.
