Domestic Trade Ministry to brief public on managing expenses

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry officers will soon be visiting villages, schools and higher education institutions to give briefings on economic issues and the cost of living.

Minister Hamzah Zainudin said this was to educate the people in managing expenses to help them cope with the rising cost of living.

"When we talk about cost of living, we should look at several factors. We cannot say that cost of living has gone up due to the price of a single item because the cost of living depends on the prices of several goods and services.

“The government will implement price controls on essential items such as rice, flour, sugar, cooking oil, cooking gas and indeed, there is no hike in the prices. Therefore, it is not right to say that the rising cost of living is due to these items."

He was speaking to reporters after officiating the Gabungan Ahli Sunnah Malaysia (Gasma) annual gathering which was also attended by Gasma chairman Abdullah Yasin and Makkah Grand Mosque mufti Sulaiman Al-Salumi in Georgetown today.

Hamzah, who is also Gasma adviser said the people should live within their means and be aware of the difference between what they needed and wanted.

"In terms of lifestyle, don't buy things you can't afford to impress others but find a way of spending that works for you,” he said.
