Umno deputy president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he hoped party delegates will be mindful of other races in the party's last annual general assembly before the 14th general election.

"What is important is that we are a pluralistic country. Even though Malayness forms the foundation (landasan), we cannot forget other races, religions and cultures.

"I hope the delegates will see that this plurality forms the basis (of the country) even though we (Umno) are the backbone of BN.

"We will not forget the different people in every level of society," he said in a pre-recorded interview with Astro Awani which was aired tonight.

In the interview, Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister and home minister, spoke about rejuvenating Umno and emphasised that the door was open for young candidates to contest in the 14th general election.

"What happened in the Sarawak state election, for example, party hierarchy does not necessarily form the basis for choosing candidates.

"God willing, this will also happen (for the 14th general election)," he said.

Zahid stressed that Umno members have been well-trained and are prepared to face the next general election.

The current Parliament term is set to expire in June next year if an election is not called earlier.

An election must be called within 60 days from the dissolution of the Dewan Rakyat.

The 71st Umno annual general assembly will take place from Dec 5 to 9.
