At least 1,000 people gathered outside the United States Embassy in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon to protest against President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital city.

The crowd comprised leaders and supporters from Umno, PAS and Pakatan Harapan parties as well as those from various Muslim NGOs.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin led his members to submit a memorandum of protest to the embassy officials about 2.30pm.

"Mark my words, Trump, we are not here for conflict, but we want to make sure that even the most powerful man in the free world respects international law.

"That you will not continue to insult the feelings of not only Muslims but people all over the world who want to see justice, a safe and independent Palestinian nation," Khairy said when addressing the crowd while standing on a truck parked near the embassy building.

"Mr President, this is an illegal announcement. Jerusalem is an occupied territory.

"You must not even set foot in Jerusalem or make that the capital of Israel. Believe me, this is just the beginning," the youth and sports minister said, and he went on to warn Trump of a possible global outcry over his decision.

Khairy also warned that global condemnation against Trump's administration would continue until the day that the Palestinian land was returned to the Palestinian people.

He also noted in his address that the day's protest was a united show of force from Umno, PAS, Muslim NGOs as well as representatives from Palestine's Hamas party.

Earlier, chaos ensued as hundreds of supporters insisted on accompanying Khairy to the embassy's entrance, but were prevented from doing so by Light Strike Force officers and men on duty.

A senior police officer on duty eventually instructed Khairy to order the crowd to back off and allowed only two representatives to enter the embassy.

The crowd chanted anti-Jewish slogans, warning of a Muslim uprisal, and cries of solidarity with the Palestinians under siege.

Also seen were Umno Youth deputy chief Khairul Azwan Harun, Umno Sungai Besar chief Jamal Md Yunos and Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who earlier this morning led Harapan Youth members to submit their own protest memorandum at the embassy.

PAS Youth chief Khalil Abdul Hadi and other party leaders were gathered about 500 metres away from the crowd, remaining on site even as Khairy called on his own members to disperse at 2.45pm,after a prayer was read by Umno Youth exco member Fathul Bari Mat Jahya.

PAS also mobilised their volunteer Unit Amal squad for traffic control from the rally's starting point at the nearby Tabung Haji building towards the embassy.

The Light Strike Force officers and men were stationed to increase security outside the embassy.

Trump reversed decades of US policy on Wednesday by officially recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, disrupting the Middle East peace efforts and upsetting the Arab world and Western allies alike.

The status of Jerusalem - home to sites holy to the Muslim, Jewish and Christian religions - is one of the biggest obstacles to reaching a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.

As the crowd was dispersing, a small group of individuals set fire to an effigy of Trump, and his images, as a symbol of their protest.
