Zaid Ibrahim said he has not done anything wrong that would warrant him apologising to the Selangor ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

He was commenting on his tweet that has come under heavy attack at the Umno general assembly this week.

“I feel I have not erred. When one apologises, it's because we have done wrong. (What has happened) is a small matter.

“Of course, my tweet was meant for the Selangor sultan, but what wrong have I committed that I need to offer an apology?” he said after officiating an event organised by Amanah in the Bunut Payung state constituency in Kota Bharu last night.

He said any wrong he is deemed to have committed should be established first by the authorities.

“Whether I have committed a wrong is for the police investigation to establish, for the courts to hear, and to decide

"The police will investigate me, but at this stage they have yet to contact me. I will give my explanation then, it's no problem," he said.

Yesterday, inspector-general of police Mohd Fuzi Harun said Zaid is being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948.

This is over his remarks in response to the sultan warning that former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's anger could raze the nation.

The sultan also took Zaid to task and told the latter to return to his home state of Kelantan if he disagreed with him.

Umno information chief Annuar Musa, weighing in on the tiff at the sidelines of the AGM, urged Zaid to apologise to the sultan.

Meanwhile after torching images of Zaid earlier this week, Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos yesterday smashed a cardboard cutout of the former minister with a sledgehammer outside the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur, demanding the authorities to act.

Later today, several DAP leaders visited Zaid to show support amid the threats against him.

Among them were DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and the party's Seputeh MP Teresa Kok and Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong. Kok shared the visit on Twitter.

"We expressed solidarity to him over Jamal’s threat and bashing against him. He seemed quite cool about it," she said.
