Gerakan claims Penang gov’t going easy on certain developers

Penang Gerakan today questioned why the DAP-led state government has given so much leniency to certain developers for sale of land in the state since 2008.

Its chairperson, Teng Chang Yeow, said the state government had designed policies only to benefit a few Penangites.

He claimed that out of 14 land transactions during the DAP administration, 10 were through open tender, but the payment terms were not made public.

"For the land transactions, the payment terms were not made public, contrary to their championing competency, accountability and transparency,” he said to reporters here.

He said that based on media and corporate reports, the Penang government had to explain to the public the sale of two pieces of land, in Bayan Mutiara and Batu Kawan, which he claimed were purchased by two prominent Penang-based developers.

"The state government, Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Chief Minister Inc (CMI) need to answer whether the full payments have been made by these developers after the two pieces of land were sold in early 2011 and 2014," he said.

Teng, who is also Penang BN chairperson, said the state government should clarify whether it was true that the state government, PDC and CMI had given much leeway to some developers.

Last Monday, Teng claimed that the DAP government sold off 2,178.72 hectares of state land since 2008 compared to the 1,074 hectares while the state was under the BN.
