Top 10 news and 2017 newsmaker - you decide

It is a tradition that come the end of December, Malaysiakini takes its readers through the best and the worst news of the year.

This year the country’s political landscape continues to evolve ahead of the general election which must be held by next August.

Who would have thought that Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Bersatu would join Pakatan Harapan and that the former premier would now become the de facto opposition leader? And who would have thought that Umno and PAS would be working hand in glove to strengthen Islamic laws?

Like last year, we are letting Malaysiakini subscribers decide the top 10 headline grabbers of 2017. There are 19 news categories listed in alphabetical order for this year’s vote.

Voting is done by showing your preference for each item - ‘0' being the lowest and ‘10' the highest. You can give the same score for more than one item.

Go ahead. Take one last look at 2017 before we move on to possibly an even more exciting 2018.

And, don't forget to also vote for the Newsmaker of the Year.

A quick recap - a newsmaker does not necessarily have to be the most popular individual. He or she is one whose actions consistently make news headlines, and in doing so, affects the course of public discourse and creates an impact on Malaysian politics, for better or for worse.

We have selected 12 candidates for you to pick.

This year, we have introduced a new category – the most popular commenter. There are 15 contenders for the top three prizes - a one-year free Malaysiakini subscription worth RM200 each.

Everyone is entitled to one vote.

Voting ends at midnight, Dec 26, and the results will be announced over three consecutive days beginning Dec 28.
