The 14-to-1 vote during the UN Security Council emergency meeting on the US’ recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel indicates clear international opposition to the move, said Wisma Putra.

In a statement today, it said Malaysia also expressed its disappointment over the veto by the US on the draft resolution that was proposed by Egypt during the Security Council meeting on Monday.

“Malaysia reiterates that the issue of Jerusalem is at the core of the Palestinian cause and calls on all member states of the UN not to recognise any attempt to alter the character and status of Jerusalem.

“Malaysia welcomes the initiative by Turkey to call for a UN General Assembly Emergency Special Session to deliberate on this issue, with a view to tabling a similar resolution,” it said.

On Dec 6, US President Donald Trump declared that the US recognises Jerusalem as Israel's capital and ordered that the US embassy be moved to the disputed holy city.

The move infuriated Palestinians and other Muslims across the world.
