As Malaysian Muslims openly rallied in solidarity with those caught in the Jerusalem tussle last Friday, a church leader said today that Christians too are also showing solidarity but within their churches.

Council of Churches Malaysia general-secretary Hermen Shastri told reporters that most churches here share the United Nation's (UN) position on the question of Jerusalem with regards to rights of the Palestinians and Israelis to their homelands.

"The Vatican and the World Council of Churches are in solidarity when it comes to the Christians that are in Israel and Palestine.

"Many of the Christian leaders, the Bishops and all that, many of them are Palestinians," said Hermen.

He was responding to a question about the series of public rallies held to condemn US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital city.

Given the status of Jerusalem as a holy site for Muslims, Christians and Jews, Hermen also said the churches share the UN's stand that Jerusalem should be a shared capital for Palestine and Israel.

"Jerusalem is a place that all religions are interested in it.

"It should be a city of peace. It should be a shared capital,” he said when met on the sidelines of the Christian Federation of Malaysia's annual Christmas high-tea event today.

Father George Harrison, a Catholic priest from Seremban, similarly urged all quarters to exercise wisdom in handling the issue.

“Well, we have to use the wisdom that comes from God and sacred scriptures to find a peaceful solution for this.

“I think we can always seek an answer by seeking for wisdom and the right thing to do. Instead of looking for a kind of quick response to a situation. We can always have some other ways,” he said.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had at Putrajaya's 'Save Jerusalem' rally last Friday vowed that Malaysia would not back down on efforts to defend Palestine against the Zionist regime.

In the weeks prior, both Umno and Pakatan Harapan parties had also led protest rallies over the same issue outside the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

The UN General Assembly on Thursday voted 128 to nine in rejecting the US' decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
