1,303 schools to proceed with DLP this year - Education Ministry

The Dual Language Programme (DLP) will be implemented in 1,303 schools this year.

The Education Ministry in a statement today said it would continue with the DLP at the 1,215 schools that had adopted the programme and also grant approval for another 88 schools that were keen to implement it this year.

The ministry said a special circular and guidelines for the implementation of the DLP would be issued in the first week of January this year.

"All 1,215 schools will continue with the programme for the existing classes and they can offer the DLP to the new batch of Year One and Form One students only, while for the 88 additional schools, the programme is only available for the new batch of Year One and Form One students,” it said.

According to the statement, the DLP will begin on Sunday (Jan 7) for schools in Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan and Johor, while for the other states, the programme will begin on Monday (Jan 8).

Schools with the DLP will be given the option to have teaching and learning sessions in English, as well as Bahasa Melayu for Mathematics and Science subjects.

The purpose of implementing the DLP is to help students master the English language in Science and Mathematics.

"It also gives students the opportunity to access various fields of knowledge to compete globally as well as to enhance students’ marketability in the workplace,” the statement said.
