A Cambodian court has given two Vietnamese long prison terms after convicting them of trafficking two Vietnamese women who were due to become prostitutes in Malaysia, a court official said Wednesday.

Anti-trafficking police arrested Dou Dainglorng, 40, and Ngueng Thivin, 49, in April as they tried to take two Vietnamese women aged 17 and 21 to the Cambodian-Thai border in northwestern Poipet town to be taken to Malaysia.

Phnom Penh municipal court prosecutor Nget Sarath told AFP the court Tuesday found the pair guilty of trafficking the two women.

The court also found Dou Dainglorng guilty of using a fake passport and jailed him for a total of 16 years. Ngueng Thivin was also found guilty of being an accomplice in making fake passports and jailed for 13 years, Nget Sarath said.

He said the court also sentenced in absentia Ngueng Thivin's husband, who is at large, to 18 years in prison for trafficking the two woman and making fake passports.

The court in July handed sentences of 10 and 15 years to two Vietnamese for trafficking females from their homeland, including the daughter of one of them, to be sex workers in Malaysia.

Cambodia, one of the world's poorest nations, is both a significant sender and receiver of trafficked people because of its weak border controls and poorly enforced migration laws.
