(AFP) - An opposition leader today hailed the release of a student activist held without charge for 23 days under the controversial Internal Security Act (ISA).

PAS Youth chief Mahfuz Omar, described the student's release as proof that students were not involved in militant anti-government activities.

"We welcome the release. The government must realise that students are not anti-national. What they oppose is abuse of power, corruption and they demand justice," he told AFP.

Khairul Anuar Ahmad Zainuddin, 24 was released yesterday. He had been detained under the ISA, which allows indefinite detention without trial, on July 5.

On July 16, Universiti Malaya student leader Mohd Fuad Mohd Ikhwan, 22, who was also held under the ISA for 10 days was released.

Six supporters of jailed ex-deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim have been sent to a prison camp for up to two years under the terms of the ISA.

Stifling dissent

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been unapologetic, insisting his government has nothing to apologise for in using the Act.

He claimed some detainees had tried to buy weapons for use in violent street protests to topple his government.The government has not produced any evidence of a militant plot.

Opponents say Mahathir is merely using the law to stifle peaceful dissent.

Mahfuz, urged the government to release the six opposition and reform activists held under the ISA.

"If they have committed any crime, charge them in the open court. Detaining them without being charged in court is against the constitution. It is a human rights violation," he said.
