Philippines evacuates 919 families over Mayon volcano fears

More than 900 families have been evacuated from areas near Mayon volcano in the central province of Albay, Philippines as the volcano continues ejecting ash into the air, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.

The mandatory evacuation of 919 households was ordered by local authorities due to the abnormal activities of Mayon, said the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council spokesperson, Romina Marasigan.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the volcano rumbled back to life on January 13 and the institute recorded two eruptions on the morning of January 14, spewing ash plume around 2,500 meters high.

The Mayon, 2,460m in height and 20km in width, is one of Philippines’ active volcanoes famous for its beauty and near-perfect symmetry.

It has erupted 51 times during the past 400 years. The most destructive eruption was reported in 1814, which killed about 1,200 people and buried three towns under mud and rock.
