T’ganu boasts of international attention after transgender ‘rehab’

The approach used by the Terengganu government in bringing back transgenders to the “right path” has attracted the attention of several foreign news agencies.

State Communications and Multimedia and Special Functions Committee chairperson Ghazali Taib said since a news report on his recent meeting with more than 100 transgenders in Kuala Terengganu was published by the media, he had been receiving calls from foreign journalists keen to know more about it.

"Initially, they thought the state government wanted to penalise the transgenders or take action that that might breach human rights.

“However, after explaining to them the state government’s intention in wanting to bring the transgenders to the right path, only then do they (foreign journalists) understand the real objective of the rehabilitation programme for transgenders in Terengganu,” he told Bernama here today.

He said the foreign news media outlets that had contacted him included those from Japan, Korea, France and other European countries.
