PAS will not endorse Najib Abdul Razak or Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the prime minister's post, according to the Islamist party's Youth vice-chief Ahmad Fadli Saari.

He said there was no need for PAS to be trapped by Mahathir's call on the party to state who its pick is for the top position.

On Tuesday, Mahathir, who is Pakatan Harapan's prime minister candidate, had asked PAS to reveal if it supported him or Najib.

"We want to know. If they say who their candidate is. I think they can win (in the coming election) if people like their candidate," the 93-year-old former prime minister had said.

However, Ahmad Fadli said the fact is that PAS is on the right track with regard to facing the 14th general election, where it is banking on the Gagasan Sejathera platform.

Gagasan Sejathera, which comprises PAS, Ikatan and Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM), is touted as the alternative to both BN and Harapan.

Ikatan is led by former minister Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir, while PCM is helmed by Huan Cheng Guan, a former Gerakan vice-president.

Ahmad Fadli also said that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has repeatedly stressed that the Islamist party is not with the BN nor Harapan.

“PAS' agenda does not stop with installing a prime minister but to change the national administrative policy to one based on syariah (Islamic law) and welfare.

“Who becomes prime minister is not a priority. What is more important is that the policies put forth can ensure the welfare of the people (is safeguarded),” he was quoted as stating in Harakah Online.

PAS, he said, does not wish to be trapped in the agenda of supporting individuals who are proven to have implemented policies that have inconvenienced the people and demolished the nation's political climate.

“However, if PAS must answer (Mahathir's question), it is sufficient to say, 'Of two evils, choose neither',” Ahmad Fadli added.

Commenting on this issue, former information minister Zainuddin Maidin claimed that PAS' pick is Najib.

“Mahathir wants to know who is PAS' PM candidate... Definitely Najib with Hadi as deputy prime minister,” he tweeted.
