Chinese support for Dr M puzzles MCA man

The Chinese community's support for Dr Mahathir Mohamad is strange, given his history of authoritarian rule, scandals, cronyism and corruption, MCA Religious Harmony Bureau secretary Chris Daniel Wong said.

"It is puzzling as to why the Chinese community would gleefully cheer Mahathir on in joining his once biggest rival opposition coalition," Wong said.

He said the Chinese had shown that they rejected Mahathir by giving his successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi a landslide victory in the 2004 general election.

"It was clear that Mahathirism was despised by all, especially by the Chinese, and Pak Lah's election was a fresh breath of air against it," he added.

Wong (photo) said Mahathir was an authoritarian ruler for 22 years, during which he was complicit in the Bumiputra Malaysia Finance (BMF) scandal and later interfered in the judicial system by sacking and suspending several top judges.

In view of this, Wong said the DAP, which was once staunchly anti-Mahathir, was now "hypnotising" the public and "whitewashing Mahathirism" just as how the party once backed PAS.

"Mahathir is not truly championing the cause of 'saving the country', but merely to recapture power and resume his previous authoritarian roles.

"The future of the country cannot be pawned just for self-gain and only a leader with the sincerity to lead should be voted into governing the country," Wong said.

He said Mahathir's primary motivation was to lead a group of disgruntled former Umno leaders against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and that these people were insincere about bringing true change to Malaysia.

"So now the Chinese community should decide the future they want. A stable and moderate BN government, or a conflictual Pakatan Harapan which champions the bygone era of Mahathirism," Wong added.
