PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar has predicted that the new electoral boundaries would be passed by Parliament during the March sitting.

Following this, the Lembah Pantai MP said, the nation might witness the “dirtiest elections ever”.

The federal government, she added, would ensure a swift passage for the implementation of the new electoral boundaries, instead of subjecting the matter to proper parliamentary scrutiny.

“Most of us feel they will bulldoze the redelineation exercise… and it will be approved by virtue of (BN having) the majority in Parliament.

“It will be a parliamentary session to remember,” Nurul Izzah told a press conference today.

The Election Commission (EC) has completed the redrawing of electoral boundaries for all states except Selangor.

After encountering several legal hurdles, the EC has managed to resume the process in Selangor and might be able to complete it by March.

'New boundaries will work in BN's favour'  

Critics and election watchdogs have repeatedly said the new boundaries would reduce the number of mixed-ethnicity seats, which would work in favour of BN.

Nurul Izzah claimed that the problem was compounded by Pakatan Harapan's discovery of irregularities in the lists of voters and the limited options for recourse.

“Apart from having more postal voters and 'phantom' voters, there is the redelineation to deal with.

“Usually, in any given constituency, 30 percent (of the voters) will sit on the fence. Now, that number has reduced as more Umno supporters will be placed in targeted constituencies.

“That is what the redelineation does. These exercises will compound into an election that will not be fair at all. It may be the dirtiest in Malaysia's history,” she added.

Earlier, Nurul Izzah alleged that the authorities were dragging their feet on the complaints regarding the irregularities in the Wangsa Maju parliamentary seat, with the police not acting on reports filed.

Previously, the PKR lawmaker had objected to the EC's decision to include Bukit Aman - the national police headquarters - as part of the Lembah Pantai constituency.

Nurul Izzah retained the Lembah Pantai seat in 2013 with a slim 1,847-vote majority.

Electoral reform movement Bersih recently called for greater checks and balances for the postal voting process, following observations in previous elections that the process was open to abuse.
