Tunnel project: Penang BN seeks Chinese consulate-general's help

The Penang BN Youth yesterday handed over a formal letter to the Chinese consulate-general in Penang, to seek help in contacting representatives from China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) to explain matters over the undersea tunnel and three highway projects worth RM6.3 billion.

Its chief Hng Chee Way said the letter was submitted with the hope that the company responsible for the project construction would come forward to clarify several matters which have been raised so that people in the state could learn of the real facts.

"Referring to the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) website, the report submitted by the CRCC to SASAC showed that CRCC had entered a contract with Konsortium Malaysia Zenith BUCG Co Ltd  to make a detailed design on the construction of three highways and an undersea tunnel and the contract was valued at US$22 million. Is this true?

"We want to ask whether this is true and we hope the Chinese consulate-general will invite CRCC to explain this confusion because the state BN chairperson (Teng Chang Yeow) mentioned one figure, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said another thing and the state executive council gave a different version in the state assembly,” he told reporters after handing over the official letter in George Town yesterday.

Hng also demanded to know whether the website is the official website of SASAC and whether CRCC is an SPV (special purpose vehicle) for the project.

Also present were Penang Umno Youth chief Rafizal Abdul Rahim and Gerakan Youth chief Jason Loo.

Meanwhile, Rafizal also urged the Penang chief minister to not mislead the people on the highway and tunnel projects.

"The chief minister is once again trying to mislead the people of Penang when declaring that the tunnel and the three highways are different projects. We have also made some surveys and noticed that on the state government website on Oct 6, 2013, at the signing, it was said that the three highways and tunnel project come as a package.

"So BN Youth is appealing for an explanation from the chief minister on which is correct, his recent statement or that made on Oct 6, 2013,” he said.
