Media urged to boost efforts to counter fake news during GE14

Media practitioners will have to step up efforts to tackle fake news in social media, especially during the 14th general election (GE14), said MCA president Liow Tiong Lai.

"In view of the general election fever, the number of fake messages, fake news are more and more circulated in the market, we hope that media can counter it.

"MCA is ready to give its fullest cooperation to our media friends, " he said when speaking at the MCA media night, which was attended by 1,000 media practitioners at the party headquarters in Kuala Lumpur tonight.

Also present were deputy president Wee Ka Siong, vice president Chua Tee Yong and secretary general Ong Ka Chuan.

Meanwhile Liow, who is also Transport Minister, said he commended the media for the dissemination of accurate news that ensured the people continued to enjoy national transformation development programmes effectively.

"We hope the cooperation and alliances that have been attained between MCA and the media so far can be further enhanced so that information on government policies, programmes and efforts can continue to be delivered to the people,” he added.
