Fake news is Dr M's 'My Way', says Annuar

Umno information chief Annuar Musa has censured the opposition especially those aligned to Dr Mahathir Mohamad for allegedly using fake news and hired foreign portals as their political fodder.

He said they resorted to this to create a negative perception towards Umno, BN and the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

“The mother of all 'fake news' is that RM42 billion of 1MDB funds had gone missing, stolen.

“But now, the people no longer care about the 1MDB issue because they know the opposition's scheme and narrative,” he told Umno Online.

Therefore, Annuar said, “Team Mahathir” had to look for a new “weapon” and once again used the Sarawak Report website.

“This time they attempted to make fake news involving the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) which was immediately denied,” he added.

Annuar said EPF should file a police report in London, where Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown is based.

According to the Umno leader, Mahathir has also prepared a series of fake news.

“When the Indonesian authorities were reported to have seized Jho Low's superyacht, Mahathir and Pakatan Harapan's minions were excited. But this is between Jho Low and the US authorities which has been dragging on for years without being brought to court.

"The luxury yacht Equanimity does not belong to Malaysia or 1MDB. Jho Low has nothing to do with 1MDB, and 1MDB did not lose anything because 1MDB dealt with IPIC (International Petroleum Investment Company) and Aaabar, directly and all of them were arm's length business deals," Annuar said.

Therefore, any dealing between a third party with 1MDB's foreign business partners is out of 1MDB's control and Malaysia's legal jurisdiction, he added.

Despite this, Mahathir wanted to build a "perception" that the prime minister was part of the 1MDB scheme, Annuar lamented.

"All these are Mahathir's 'games' to wrest power for himself, his family and the cronies he has protected all this while.

“His priority is keeping people who will follow his 'My Way' in power, not forgetting his long-term, sole goal of putting his son (Mukhriz) as the prime minister."

Annuar was jabbing at Mahathir's favourite song 'My Way' by Frank Sinatra, which the former premier had belted out on several occasions.

"What they (the opposition) want to do now is raise doubts and erode the rakyat's confidence in the leadership of the prime minister.

"This is the tactic used by Mahathir, who is an expert in perception war, which saw him stay in power for more than 20 years," said Annuar, adding that the nonagenarian was even willing to go to the extent of sucking up to DAP to reach his goal.
