Beam launcher at MRT site collapses, worker killed

A launching gantry or a beam launcher collapsed at a MRT construction site in Jalan Jinjang in Kuala Lumpur last night, killing one of the workers and injuring another.

Sentul deputy police chief Mohamed Rafiq Mohamed Mustafa said the incident occurred at 11.40pm yesterday, and identified the deceased as Mohd Firdaus Abdul Mutalib, 41.

The body had been sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for postmortem, he said when contacted by Bernama.

On the injured worker, he said the victim was only known as Zulhilmi, who sustained injury on the leg and was sent to Selayang Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, MMC Gamuda KVMRT Sdn Bhd (MMC Gamuda) said in a statement that no member of the public was involved in the incident, which occurred completely within the confines of the work site and did not impact any public area.

It said the worksite is under Work Package V203 and the work package contractor (WPC) is IJM Construction Sdn Bhd.

According to the statement, MMC Gamuda, which is the delivery partner of the construction of the MRT SSP Line, together with the project owner Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd, have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

“We also wish to state that the use of launching gantries for constructing the MRT elevated guideway follows stringest safety procedures. Those which have been installed are safe," the statement said.

Nevertheless, it said precaution, safety checks and procedures had been stepped up at all existing launching gantries for the project.

"MMC Gamuda, MRT Corp and all involved in the project extend our deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims. All support needed will be provided to the families during this difficult time," it said.
