Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman is prepared to give way for party president Muhyiddin Yassin to contest in Muar, despite eyeing the parliamentary seat.

"Whether Muhyiddin contests in Pagoh or Muar, I will support him 100 percent and make sure that he wins," 26-year-old Syed Saddiq told Malaysiakini when met in Muar yesterday.

Muhyiddin yesterday at a press conference said whether he will defend his Pagoh parliamentary seat or move to Muar will be revealed soon.

Syed Saddiq said the Bersatu president's influence would not be restricted to just one constituency, and that if the latter contests in Muar, his influence would still be felt in Pagoh.

As for himself, Syed Saddiq said he is prepared to contest any other seat as long as it is in Johor.

"This is because Johor is an Umno stronghold, and we (Pakatan Harapan) must unlock it to reach Putrajaya," he said.

Syed Saddiq has been actively working on the ground in Muar, holding events together with Johor Amanah women's chief Norhayati Bachok and PKR Youth's Naim Jusri – both of whom are slated to contest the Maharani and Sungai Balang state constituencies under Muar respectively.

Muar's incumbent is Umno's Razali Ibrahim, who is also a deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department.

Proponents of Muhyiddin moving to Muar cite Razali's slim 1,646 vote majority in 2013, and the higher percentage of non-Malay voters who could give the former deputy prime minister an advantage.

However, many in the Johor Bersatu grassroots want Muhyiddin to remain in Pagoh, with the additional possibility of contesting the Jorak state seat as well.
