The people in Teluk Intan would get to experience the luxurious amenities of the Equanimity superyacht first hand should Pakatan Harapan take Putrajaya in the coming general election.

At a Harapan ceramah in Teluk Intan last night, DAP Taiping parliamentarian Nga Kor Ming vowed to bring Equanimity to Teluk Intan and let the people inspect the infamous mega yacht up close.

"I promise, if we become the government, I will bring the RM1 billion luxury yacht here and let the people in Teluk Intan take a ride on it.

"After that, we will auction it and the money will be returned to the people," he told a 2,000-strong crowd in Teluk Intan town.

When asked later, Nga, who is speculated to contest in Teluk Intan in the coming election, said he was serious about his promise.

"I think we are confident we can do that," he insisted.

"If we were to form government, we will definitely write to US Department of Justice (DOJ) to claim back the money because we sincerely believe this money was stolen from the people in Malaysia. This is our money, including the Equanimity.

"So, it is my hope that, if given a chance, we would like to bring the superyacht to Teluk Intan and at least let the people see how grand it is," he said.

Last month, the Equanimity superyacht, which is linked to businessperson Low Taek Jho, a key personality in the 1MDB scandal, was seized in Bali.

Jho Low had subsequently, through his spokesperson, condemned the seizure of the luxury yacht, which can hold 26 guests as well as 33 crew members, and has a helicopter pad.

The US$250 million vessel is being sought by the DOJ on the grounds that it was bought using funds allegedly siphoned from state-owned sovereign wealth fund 1MDB.

The DOJ is seeking to seize approximately US$1 billion worth of assets which was allegedly bought with 1MDB funds that it claimed were misappropriated.

Putrajaya has maintained that no 1MDB money is missing or stolen.

Sudden change of venue

Yesterday's ceramah was initially to be held at Menara Condong in Teluk Intan, but the opposition moved it to HSBC Bank in Pekan Teluk Intan - 200 meters away from the planned venue after they discovered that tents were erected there ostensibly for an event on Sunday.

The change of venue, however, did not stop the crowd from turning up at the opposition ceramah.

"Since Sin Chew Daily reported that I am expected to be fielded, I kept receiving phone calls. So I want to ask, can Nga Kor Ming come to Teluk Intan," he asked the audience.

The crowd passionately responded with a thunderous “yes”.

"Then I would like to announce that Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and (party adviser) Lim Kit Siang will come soon and they will announce (the candidate in Teluk Intan)," he said.

He called for the voters to reject incumbent parliamentarian Mah Siew Keong, describing that a vote for Mah is a vote for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

"The coming election is not a battle between Mah and the DAP candidate but a battle between the people and Najib and BN," he said.

Mah, who is Gerakan leader and plantation industries and commodities minister, won the southern Perak seat with a razor-thin majority of 234 votes at the 2014 by-election.

DAP's Seah Leong Peng had won the seat at the 2013 general election with a majority of 7,313.

However, he passed away a year later, paving the way for a by-election with Mah defeating DAP’s Dyana Sofia Mohd Daud in a bitter fight.
