Lim Kit Siang has sent an email to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over the latter's claim that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report absolved him of any wrongdoing in the 1MDB scandal.

The email, he added, is to seek an appointment for him and DAP lawmaker Tony Pua, who is also a PAC member, with the prime minister next week.

Lim wanted Najib to show Pua and him which part of the PAC report had cleared him.

“Najib's claim that he had been cleared of any wrongdoing in the PAC report is false and baseless, and the latest example of 'fake news' concocted and peddled by those-in-power,” he added in a media statement this afternoon.

Lim also gave Najib the benefit of the doubt that the latter could have made a mistake and was referring to the auditor-general's report on 1MDB, which remains classified, and not the PAC report.

“And if so, I am prepared to accept such an 'honest mistake' provided he shows me the chapter and verse of such exoneration in the auditor-general's report,” he said.

On the same note, Lim asked if Najib is not prepared to retract his “false and baseless” claim that the PAC report had cleared him, would the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and police investigate him for peddling false news.

“After all, only this morning at the 211st Police Day, Najib denied that the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) is the government's lackey, saying that such allegations are 'absolutely unfounded'.

“Will we see police action against Najib for perpetrating the fake news … or will the police and the inspector-general of police remain inelegantly silent?” he added.

The DAP veteran said if Najib failed to respond to his email, he would proceed with the plan to hold a nationwide forum on whether the PAC report had cleared the prime minister.

“Najib is welcome to attend every such forum or to send a representative to the forum.

“Najib will be informed when such a programme for the nationwide forum has been finalised, so that he could either attend personally or send a representative,” he added.

Lim said the forum could be kicked off as early as in a week's time given the importance of the matter.

On Friday, Najib urged Malaysians to read the PAC report regarding 1MDB.

"We need to ask ourselves some key questions. Firstly, did any paragraph claim that I stole 1MDB funds? Absolutely not.

"Secondly, did the report state I committed a crime? Did I do any wrong? The answer is no.

"Finally, in the report, did it say the donation from the Saudi government was from 1MDB? Absolutely not," he said.
