The Penang City Council has slapped Penang BN with an RM13,448 fine for failing to seek the council's approval when putting up hundreds of posters along busy streets across the state.

Penang BN chief Teng Chang Yeow, who admitted that his party put up the posters, had targeted Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

The posters had listed what it claimed were the state government's 51 "empty promises".

According to a statement issued by the Penang City Council, the fine was derived from 27 notices of offence which cost RM250 each. This amounted to RM6,750.

The Penang City Council also billed Penang BN another RM6,698 for cleaning works and logistics, bringing the total to RM13,448.

The statement was shared by DAP's Tanjong MP Ng Wei Aik on Facebook.

"For Teng Chang Yeow or Penang BN, RM13,448 is not a big deal at all," he said in the Facebook post.

On Thursday, the Election Commission (EC) said it had no authority over such material being put up before the general election.

The EC added that it was up to the respective local councils to enforce their own rules during this period.
