GE14 | MCA president Liow Tiong Lai today cautioned that a single-race government could see Malaysia head down a dangerous path towards extremist policies.

In urging the Chinese community to support BN at the polls, Liow said that MCA's representatives in government will ensure that BN continues to implement "moderate and inclusive" policies for all.

"If MCA is not in the government, if there are no Chinese representatives in government, a lot of voices of non-Muslims cannot be heard.

"So what I am saying is that if the government consists of only one single race, then it could go down the extreme way," he told a press conference after launching MCA'S GE14 manifesto, which outlined the party’s 10 main initiatives and 10 pledges.

He said this when asked to elaborate on the MCA's commitment to be a check and balance for the BN government, as stated in the preamble of its manifesto.

As Liow pointed out, MCA had four full ministers and nine deputy ministers prior to the 2013 election.

"Now we don't have this anymore. 

"That is why I am talking to the Chinese community, urging them to have this kind of thinking on how to keep Malaysia multiracial, inclusive and moderate...," he said.

"We need their support. Because if the MCA is in the government, we will ensure that all these voices will be heard," he added.

'Najib to confirm MCA candidates, seats'

Liow, meanwhile, also said the party has submitted its candidates list to BN chairperson Najib Abdul Razak, who is expected to announce his final decision soon.

In terms of seats, he confirmed there could be swaps made with other BN component parties, but insisted that a final decision would only be made if both parties came to an agreement on the matter.

On March 20, Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong reportedly said that final negotiations to swap five parliamentary and state seats with MCA were taking place.

He declined to provide details of the breakdown of seats, but it is understood that the seats involved are in Penang, Pahang, Perak and Kuala Lumpur.
