Dr Mahathir Mohamad remains unapologetic for using the word “keling,” which is considered derogatory to Malaysian Indians.

The former premier said this when asked to respond to MIC treasurer-general S Vell Paari describing him as a racist.

"It's our language (in Kedah) and I've used the word 'keling' since I was small, there is no problem.

"My 'keling' friends have never scolded me, so why is MIC angry over this," he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

The word “keling” was not considered offensive when it was first conceived in the 15th century. It is commonly used among northerners, especially the older generation.

Last night, Mahathir had used the word when criticising the Election Commission during a fundraiser.

"I want to use a 'keling' word. The 'keling' say podah (get lost),” he added.

In 2016, when Mahathir had made a similar remark, it courted the wrath of Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy.

As a former prime minister, the DAP leader said at the time, Mahathir should have known that the word is derogatory and disparaging to Indian Malaysians.

“The word by itself is not derogatory as it refers to an ancient historical place. However, the use of the word against Indians is seen as belittling or putting down members of the community.

“Mahathir is well aware of this. If he had used the word 'Indian' or 'Tamil' then it would not have elicited controversy,” he had added.
