Bernama GM asks people to trust mainstream media

The people must have trust in the mainstream media as their source of information, said Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) general manager Zulkefli Salleh.

He said the people should not completely believe the ‘news’ disseminated on social media but should evaluate the validity of the information.

“While information on social media is disseminated faster than the mainstream media, the people should be wary because the 'journalists’in the social media do not practice ethics like those carried out by media practitioners.

"Thus, we also want those taking over the profession of journalism to practice journalism ethics so that the solidarity that we have developed all this while would be preserved,” he said when appearing as a guest in the program Nine-11, produced by Bernama News Channel in Kuala Lumpur today.

He also expressed concern that the dissemination of 'fake news’ would affect the solidarity that had been achieved in the country all this while because the media too played a role in the formation of solidarity and preserving social sensitivity.

Meanwhile, commenting on the launching of National Journalists’ Day (Hawana) 2018, to be held at the Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre (MECC) tomorrow, Zulkefli hoped it would continue to be an annual event to give recognition to media practitioners.

"The presence of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak tomorrow would indirectly give the government's recognition to journalists,” he said.

Carrying the theme "Championing the People, Building the Nation”, the focus of the Hawana celebration, include the declaration that outlines the direction of national journalism and the media industry.
