GE14 | The Orang Asli community of Pos Piah in Sg Siput, Perak, have issued their own 14th general election (GE14) manifesto, which they want potential candidates to endorse in exchange for support.

"Parties from various political parties will surely seek to win votes from the people. The Pos Piah Orang Asli community will support any candidate from any party that will voice support for the Pos Piah Orang Asli's GE14 manifesto," a statement issued by the community on Tuesday states.

The manifesto seeks support for the gazetting of their lands as native customary lands, as well as to stop long-standing deforestation in their areas.

Those who wish to support the manifesto are required to sign a pledge issued by the community.

The Pos Piah Orang Asli believe that their demands are important to preserve country’s natural resources and sustainable socio-economic development, and the continuation of their customary traditions and practices.

The community claims that deforestation has been plaguing Pos Piah since 1976.

On Aug 12, 2017, 11 Orang Asli from Piah were arrested by police from Gerik for obstructing public officers from carrying out their duties.

However, members of the community insist that the 11 only wanted information from the Forestry Department regarding a planned development near their settlement.

The community, in their statement on Tuesday, said their complaints about deforestation and development on their lands to the Forestry Department and state government have thus far fallen on deaf ears.
