GE14 | From over RM3 million in cash and various assets to a negative asset value, PSM's 16 candidates for the 14th general election made their mandatory asset declarations today.

The candidates for four parliament and 12 state seats in the Peninsula revealed their sworn declarations at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall where they also received their official nomination letters from PSM chairperson Nasir Hashim.

Perak farmer Chin Kwai Heng, 52, who is running for the N33 Tronoh state seat, declared a total net asset of RM3,613,000 - comprising 15 hectares of farmland, a shop lot, two commercial lands, a house, four lots of empty housing land and one unit of share.

His younger brother Kwai Leong, 45, who is also a farmer, quipped that he is nowhere near as rich as his brother and declared a total nett asset of RM30,000 to contest in N32 Menglembu.

"I don't have a lot, I am embarrassed," he said to laughter from PSM supporters present during the event.

"It's okay, there is still Bawani," said one PSM member from the audience, in reference to the party's candidate for N40 Malim Nawar, lawyer KS Bawani.

Bawani gained prominence in 2012 during her time as a student activist after the infamous "listen, listen, listen" showdown with then Suara Wanita 1Malaysia president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen.

In her declaration, the 32-year-old lawyer said she currently has a negative asset of RM20,679.26 after taking into account an RM24,000 student loan from the Perak higher education fund.

Bawani declared a monthly income of between RM1,000 and RM2,000 despite also being a partner at a law firm based in Kampar.

Other notable declarations included PSM's candidate for N02 Jelai, orang Asli and rubber tapper Mat Nor Ayat, 45, who revealed his asset of RM2,000 in the form of a small business.

As of April 5, Mat Nor declared a total bank deposit of RM20 and RM100 cash in hand.

Speaking to reporters, PSM central committee member S Arutchelvan reiterated that public asset declarations have always been a part of the party's commitment to the people.

"We are very open and transparent about it. Traditionally we were the first to declare our assets in 1999," he said.

Arutchelvan would be re-contesting in N24 Semenyih for the third time, after losing in the past two general elections to BN's Johan Aziz.
