GE14 | Penang DAP unveiled eight new faces in its list of candidates for the 14th general election today, with two MPs, two state excos, and five incumbents dropped.
"This is the team of 'I love Penang', who must also help us win not only win Penang but Putrajaya as well," said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng in urging his team to be prepared for the coming polls.
State DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow, who made the candidate announcement, noted that incumbents remain in 13 seats.
The party is fielding candidates for seven parliamentary and 19 state seats in GE14, five of whom will be women.
Guan Eng’s special officer, Heng Lee Lee is among the news faces in the ring, alongside local councillors Syerleena Abdul Rashid, Joseph Ng, Satees Muniandy, H'ng Mooi Lye, Ong Ah Teong, and Daniel Gooi, special officer to Jagdeep Singh Deo.
Those who were dropped include two state executive councillors, Lim Hock Seng (Bagan Jermal), who held the public works, transportation and utility portfolio, as well as Danny Law (Batu Lancang), who held the tourism portfolio.
The two MPs dropped are Jeff Ooi (Jelutong) and Ng Wei Aik (Tanjong), while A Thanasekran (Bagan Dalam) and Lau Keng Ee (Pengkalan Kota) will not be defending their state seats after having served two terms.
Others who were dropped include Yap Soo Huey (Pulau Tikus), Lydia Ong (Berapit), and Teh Yee Cheu (Tanjung Bungah), who has left the party and will contest Sungai Pinang under a PSM ticket.
DAP leaders relocated to new seats include RSN Rayer, from the state seat of Seri Delima to the parliamentary seat of Jelutong; Zairil Khir Johari, from the parliamentary seat of Bukit Bendera to the state seat of Tanjung Bungah; and Soon Lip Chee, from Jawi to Bagan Jermal.
Guan Eng also bade an emotional farewell to all those who were dropped from their seats, thanking them for their services in the past.
"I feel very proud of them because they not only supported the candidate list – they have feelings too – but turned up today to witness the announcement.
"So to those who are no longer contesting, I am touched, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
"To the new candidates, the burden is now on your shoulders to carry on the fight, so that those who gave up their seats for you will feel that it is worth it," he said.
The group, who stood up to receive applause from the room, were then told by the caretaker chief minister to help the party win in the polls on May 9.
