Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi relies on his faith to help him overcome the tragic lost of his wife, Endon Mahmood, who passed away peacefully yesterday.

Asked by reporters today on how he managed to keep his calm and composure despite the ordeal, he pointed that religion can be a source of inspiration.

"For me, religion is very important. Our religion teaches us that although one may lose a member of the family, one must face it with a lot of patience," said Abdullah in a Bernama report.

Endon endured a protracted battle with breast cancer. While previous reports suggested she was recovering after seeking medical attention overseas, her passing yesterday came as a surprise for many.

Abdullah and Endon celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year. She is survived by two children.

Lonely

When asked how he was coping, Abdullah's only answer was, "Sunyi... sunyi (lonely)".

Abdullah also conveyed his gratitude to the multitude of individuals from all walks of life and foreign dignitaries for their support and concern, adding that he and his family were touched by their kindness.

Before Friday prayers today, Abdullah and his immediate family visited Endon's grave at a cemetery in Precinct 20, Putrajaya.

While it was a solemn and private affair, Abdullah allowed members of the press who gathered at the area to cover the event.

The prime minister dismissed any possibilities of taking a break, saying that he would be back at work as soon as possible.
