GE14 | The 14th general election is unique, according to DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

In the previous 13 national polls, he said, voters had decided who would be their MP or state assembly representative.

“This time, it is different and more onerous. This is because the voters on May 9, 2018 will not only elect their MP and state assemblyperson, but also the prime minister of Malaysia.

“Malaysian voters do not normally have such a right to elect the prime minister, but a combination of factors and forces have brought this about resulting in the 15 million voters electing the prime minister on May 9 – whether Najib (Abdul Razak) or (Dr) Mahathir (Mohamad),” he added.

Lim said this is the reason Pakatan Harapan wants all its candidate to win a minimum of 119 parliamentary seats to form the next government.

Speaking at a ceramah in Skudai this morning, Lim, who would be defending the Iskandar Puteri parliament seat, formerly known as Gelang Patah, urged voters in his constituency to help him ensure that BN's highly-funded campaign to defeat him does not succeed.

“In fact, I will go one step further, and ask the people of Iskandar Puteri to be the pivot of the national campaign to 'Save Malaysia' and to take the first step for Malaysia to become a normal democracy,” he added.

Lim said Umno and BN confident of defeating him in Iskandar Puteri, believing that if MCA can get the support of 30 percent of the Chinese voters, Umno would do the rest.

“Umno strategists on how BN could defeat me in Iskander Puteri may be right or wrong, as only when the votes are opened and counted on May 9 would we know whether the plan to end my 52-year political career in Iskandar Puteri will succeed,” he added.

Lim, 77, would be facing MCA's Jason Teoh, 39, in a straight fight.

In the 2013 general election, BN's Abdul Ghani Othman, the then-Johor mentri besar, lost the seat to Lim, who won by a 14,762-vote majority.
