Caretaker Selangor menteri besar Mohamed Azmin Ali has challenged BN's candidate for Kuala Langat, Shahril Sufian Hamdan to a debate over the goods and services tax (GST).

In a video uploaded on social media yesterday, Azmin, who was on the campaign trail for PKR candidate Xavier Jayakumar (above), told the 33-year-old newbie to “be a man” and take up the debate challenge.

The video clip highlighted his talk during a campaign stop in which he said that caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak had argued the country would go bankrupt without the revenue collected from GST.

Azmin said: "Wahai Najib, I want to answer. Wahai (BN) candidate for Kuala Langat parliamentary seat, what's his name ? (the crowd shouted Shahril) Who? Shahril, come here.

"I urge Shahril, if you are indeed a man, come and debate with me tomorrow night at Kuala Langat as Najib claimed he imposed the GST because the country is going to go bankrupt."

Azmin said the country would not go bankrupt without GST and he had proof of that.

According to Azmin's itinerary sent out by his media team, he had a tea session on Tuesday with members of the public at Taman Perwira, which is under the Kuala Langat constituency while his campaign trail focussed on Ampang, Gombak and Petaling Jaya yesterday.

The 33-year-old Shahril, who is also the Umno Youth exco member, is seen as a rising star in politics and has vowed to bring positive changes to Kuala Langat if he captures the semi-urban seat.

Kuala Langat is a mixed seat with a 57 percent Malay, 24 percent Chinese and 16 percent Indian electorate.

PKR has held the seat since 2008 fielding Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid, an activist who is known as fighting for the rights of workers having once led Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC).

Abdullah Sani first won the seat with a 989 majority in 2008 and a 5,356 majority in 2013.

This time around, PKR has fielded Abdullah Sani in Kapar while placing caretaker Selangor state councillor Xavier in Kuala Langat.

The redelineation exercise has seen Kuala Langat's voter population increased to 102,406 from 88,474 in 2013.
