Nik Omar, the second son of the late PAS spiritual advisor Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, is unfazed about being branded as a traitor by his own family members for contesting against the party in the Chempaka state seat.

At a Pakatan Harapan function in Shah Alam today, Nik Omar said his decision to support Harapan was made based on his belief that the coalition's approach was the most similar to that taken by his late father, popularly known as 'Tok Guru'.

"I know my immediate family was pressured, I know they were forced to think as if I have left the religion. That I have betrayed my father's struggle.

"But I am confident that I am the one continuing the legacy of Tok Guru," Nik Omar said to cheers and cries of "takbir" from the crowd of over 100 people who gathered at Section 8.

Nik Omar was responding to a local voter from Kota Anggerik who questioned him about talk that he had not received his mother's blessings to contest the seat that was previously held by his father.

Nik Omar's surprise decision to contest against PAS has triggered an outcry from among his family members, including from his younger brother and Pasir Putih parliamentary candidate Nik Abduh.

Nik Omar's cousin, Dusuki Abdul Rani (below) who is contesting for PAS in Kota Anggerik, had also spoken out against his decision.

Another member of the audience then asked if it was true that Nik Omar did not receive his mother’s blessings.

To that, he laughed and reiterated that no mother would hate their child.

Nik Omar then reiterated that Islam teaches an older sibling to care for his or her younger siblings while the younger ones should show respect for their elders.

"He (Nik Abduh) should have hoped that our mother would give her blessings to all of us," said Nik Omar.

Nik Abduh had previously said that their mother had forced herself to campaign in Pasir Putih after Nik Omar's decision to contest against PAS.

Nik Omar also said he would pray for the success of his cousin, PAS member Ahmad Dusuki, who is contesting the Kota Anggerik state seat.

"Like how I pray for the success of my brother, I also pray for the success of my cousin.

"But I also pray for the success of the Harapan candidate. So it is up to all of you to choose as this is a democracy," he said.

Nik Omar was in Selangor today to campaign for Harapan candidates including its Kota Anggerik candidate Najwan Halimi, its Batu Tiga candidate Rodziah Ismail and its Shah Alam parliamentary candidate Khalid Samad.
